Kier has been appointed by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to deliver a £59m Fire Safety Improvement (FSI) programme at HMP Wandsworth, with construction works now underway at the listed Category B and C prison in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

The programme will deliver essential upgrades to ensure the continued safe and compliant operation of the historic establishment and support the MoJ’s fire safety strategy.

The project will also explore opportunities to implement Kier’s Making Ground programme, supporting skills development and positive pathways for prison leavers across the wider Kier portfolio.

John Bolton, Regional Director – Public, Kier Construction, London and Thames Valley, said:

We are pleased to be continuing our strong relationship with the Ministry of Justice, delivering modern, resilient facilities that support the safe and secure operation of the prison estate. We are also delighted to be working at HMP Wandsworth, helping to enhance the environment for staff and prisoners and ensuring the site is equipped for the future.

The project further reinforces Kier's long-standing relationship with the MoJ and builds on its extensive experience delivering thousands of new prison places, alongside other major fire safety programmes across the prison estate. Through its specialist teams, Kier will bring expertise in delivering complex infrastructure improvements within live, secure environments.

Kier also has a strong track record in the surrounding areas, having successfully delivered Earl’s Court Primary School and Manbre Wharf – a new 150,000 sq ft home for life science organisations in the UK at the ARC West London Refinery Building development - the London Borough of Fulham and Hammersmith. Kier is also working with Richmond Council to deliver Clarendon SEND School and the Twickenham Riverside mixed-use regeneration scheme in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
