Kier has been appointed to deliver improvement works at three wastewater treatment works in Droitwich, Warton and Worksop as part of Severn Trent’s AMP8 investment programme.
These projects will support improvements to treatment performance, storm management and operational resilience across Severn Trent’s wastewater network.
The schemes form part of wider investment now progressing across the UK water sector during AMP8 to help water companies meet tighter environmental standards, improve treatment performance and increase capacity across existing infrastructure.
The projects also support wider regulatory requirements linked to the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP), including tighter phosphorus and discharge permits, future population growth and long-term river health improvements.
Andy Lingham, managing director for Water at Kier Infrastructure, said:
These awards reflect the strength of our relationship with Severn Trent and the collaborative approach both teams have taken through development and early contractor involvement. The projects span complex operational wastewater infrastructure upgrades that will support treatment performance, resilience and environmental compliance across multiple sites. As AMP8 activity continues to increase across the sector, early engagement between client, design and delivery teams is critical to reducing risk, improving constructability and developing efficient long-term solutions.
A Severn Trent spokesperson said:
The huge investment projects we are undertaking with Kier will deliver for our customers, communities and the environment. This important work will help improve our network resilience, boost capacity to deal with growing populations, and reduce phosphates in the treatment process to further help improve the health of our waterways. The three projects show our customers we are investing in the areas they and we care about passionately.
At Droitwich Sewage Treatment Works, the c.£11.7m contract is linked to improving phosphorus treatment. The works include tertiary solids removal, chemical dosing and aeration improvements, alongside wider process upgrades to support the site in achieving a tighter phosphorus consent by December 2026. The scheme forms part of Severn Trent’s Green Recovery programme.
At Warton Sewage Treatment Works, Kier will deliver c.£12m of treatment and capacity upgrades to support increased dry weather flow requirements driven by future catchment growth. The project includes new storm balancing infrastructure, activated sludge plant upgrades, sludge treatment improvements and new final settlement assets.
The c.£27m Worksop scheme includes upgrades to pumping stations, activated sludge treatment processes, final settlement infrastructure and wider site improvements. The project follows an extended period of collaborative development and early contractor involvement between Kier and Severn Trent teams, including constructability development and value engineering during the pre-construction phase.
The projects will be delivered through close collaboration between Severn Trent, design and delivery teams, with a focus on constructability, operational continuity and efficient delivery across live wastewater treatment works.
These latest awards build on Kier’s continued role across AMP8, where the business is supporting major water companies through long-term frameworks, alliances and enterprise delivery models across the UK water sector.
Kier currently supports nine major water companies nationwide, delivering water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades, network maintenance and major capital delivery programmes across more than 130 live projects.
