We are trusted to deliver water infrastructure across the UK. We design, build, upgrade and maintain assets that support environmental improvement, operational resilience and long-term performance for water and wastewater networks.
Wastewater and environment improvement
Kier delivers upgrades to wastewater treatment infrastructure that support environmental compliance, improve river health and provide capacity for growth.
Our work includes sewage treatment works upgrades, storm resilience and overflow reduction infrastructure, sludge and biosolids facilities, and nature-based solutions such as wetlands. Many of these schemes are delivered on live operational sites, requiring careful sequencing, close coordination with operational teams and a detailed understanding of treatment processes.
At Wanlip Sewage Treatment Works, Kier is delivering a £139m upgrade that will increase dry weather flow capacity by 24%. Across the Midlands, Kier has also delivered 60 new stormwater tanks to support overflow reduction and environmental improvement.
Water treatment and network resilience
Kier delivers water treatment and network upgrades across a wide range of asset types and programme scales.
This includes treatment works modernisation, strategic pipeline delivery, smart metering and network interventions that help improve water quality, reduce leakage and strengthen resilience. Our experience ranges from high-volume delivery across multiple sites to complex upgrades where operational sensitivity and regulatory scrutiny are greater.
The Alderney Water Treatment Works upgrade is one example of this capability, modernising treatment processes to improve water quality and long-term resilience while maintaining ongoing operations. Across the Anglian Water region, Kier has supported the installation of more than 1.4 million smart meters, helping improve network insight and customer-side leak identification.
Integrated delivery
Our 360 approach combines construction expertise with Kier Design Services, our in-house design capability, enabling early engagement on constructability, sequencing and risk management.
By bringing together design, engineering, construction and supply chain partners, we help develop technical solutions that are practical to build and reliable to operate. This approach supports programme certainty, safer delivery and better long-term asset performance.
We also manage complex civils, process and MEICA interfaces across both standalone and civils-led models, ensuring upgrades are delivered safely and perform as intended once operational.
Innovation, maintenance and long-term performance
Digital tools support how Kier plans, designs and delivers infrastructure across the water sector. This includes digital engineering, Building Information Modelling and collaborative design platforms that improve coordination and enhance buildability.
Innovation is also helping shape delivery. Kier’s Fibre in Water Technology combines leak detection with fibre connectivity to support more efficient network monitoring and reduced disruption.
Alongside capital delivery, Kier provides repair and maintenance services for water clients, supporting asset reliability and continuity of service. This operational experience informs capital delivery, helping ensure upgrades are easier to operate, maintain and adapt over their lifecycle.
