Across the South West, we’re delivering essential infrastructure for communities, customers and the UK economy. From flood protection and water resilience to nuclear and highways, our multidisciplinary teams bring together design, construction, civil engineering, MEICA, maintenance and operational expertise to solve complex challenges through one integrated, end-to-end delivery model.

Sonal Mitra Deputy Director, for the Environment AgencyDelivering infrastructure of this scale requires close collaboration, careful planning and a phased approach to delivery. This next stage of the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier scheme will enable continued progress on critical construction activity while supporting the construction of the tidal barrier itself. We remain focused on ensuring the scheme delivers lasting flood resilience, achieves value for money and provides wider environmental and community benefits for the area.
Our end-to-end approach in action:
Our work in the South West shows what our multi-sector, multi-capability approach means in practice, with the breadth of Kier delivering vital infrastructure works needed for the community. In one region, our teams are protecting communities from flooding, improving water quality and network performance, supporting nationally significant energy and nuclear infrastructure, and keeping strategic and local transport networks moving. We are delivering end-to-end services including design, build, civil engineering, MEICA, maintenance, operations and working with our local supply chain across the full life of an asset.
Our footprint in the South West spans the Environment Agency’s Collaborative Delivery Framework, Bridgwater Tidal Barrier scheme, the A417 Missing Link, Somerset Highways, Hinkley Point C, Devonport Royal Dockyard, Alderney Water Treatment Works and works on behalf of South West Water – the Network Services Alliance and the Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA) and Water Mains Network framework. Together, they show Kier Infrastructure operating as a single multidisciplinary business with the breadth to deliver across multiple sectors including water, nuclear & energy and transportation, whilst drawing on specialist expertise wherever each project needs it.
Water resilience at scale
In the South West, we see some of the UK’s biggest and most complex flood resilience challenges. At Bridgwater, we are working with the Environment Agency and Somerset Council to deliver a nationally significant tidal barrier scheme, which will provide lasting flood protection for the local area, protecting c.12,800 homes and businesses by reducing extreme tidal flood risks. Through the Environment Agency’s Collaborative Delivery Framework, we’re supporting a wider programme of flood and coastal risk management activity, combining traditional engineering, MEICA and nature-based solutions to improve resilience and biodiversity outcomes. This includes targeted habitat enhancement and species translocation measures to safeguard water voles, one of the UK’s fastest declining mammals.
Our works at Alderney Treatment Works for Bournemouth Water and South West Water demonstrate the other side of the water challenge; delivering a major upgrade to improve long-term water quality and resilience for the residents of Bournemouth. As well as this, in Devon and Cornwall we work with South West Water to deliver electrical and network infrastructure upgrades and we deliver reactive maintenance, leakage activity, metering, developers services and operational network support through the Network Services Alliance, completing more than 50,000 metering, repair and maintenance jobs in the last year.
Creating safer, more reliable journeys that connect people
Transportation goes beyond designing, building and maintaining highways and railways, it connects communities and supports economic growth. Across the South West, we’re delivering both major projects and essential maintenance that improve safety, reliability and resilience for road users. At the A417 Missing Link, we’re designing and building a landscape-led scheme creating 5.5km of new dual carriageway between Gloucester and Swindon. The project is designed to improve road safety, cut travel times and ease congestion for those travelling on the road. In Somerset, we’re delivering the long-term Somerset Highway Term Services contract, where our teams cover 6,714km of the network doing vital maintenance works and undertaking minor repairs to bridges, walls and other structures, as well as repairing and resurfacing footways, cycleways and carriageways.
Our combined major project and maintenance capabilities demonstrate our ability to manage complex programmes while maintaining the networks that are critical to keeping the region moving.
Trusted delivery in complex environments
In the South West, we play a key role in delivering and maintaining infrastructure that supports the UK’s energy security and national resilience. We’ve been a trusted delivery partner at Hinkley Point C since 2012, as part of the KierBAM joint venture, with the project due to create enough energy to power c.6m homes, originally commissioned to undertake the major earthworks on site, our scope of works has grown significantly and we’re leveraging our comprehensive experience of delivering large scale, complex civil engineering projects in highly regulated nuclear environments.
At Babcock’s Devonport Royal Dockyard, we’re helping to modernise critical facilities that support the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet, supporting with projects that form a critical component of the UK’s defence infrastructure.
Drawing on decades of experience, across the two projects we bring together engineering, construction and programme delivery expertise to support major national infrastructure programmes, helping to create a cleaner, safer and more resilient future.
